Understanding Acadia Healthcare’s Approach to Behavioral Health Treatment

Acadia Healthcare delivers behavioral health services through four primary service lines, each designed for different patient needs and acuity levels. The company’s network of 278 facilities across 40 states and Puerto Rico provides treatment ranging from crisis stabilization to long-term residential care.

Board Chairman Reeve B. Waud announced Debbie Osteen’s appointment as CEO in January 2026, selecting an executive who oversaw clinical program development during her first tenure from 2018 to 2022.

Acute Care Psychiatric Facilities

Acadia operates 52 acute care psychiatric facilities providing evaluation and crisis stabilization for patients with severe psychiatric diagnoses. These facilities serve patients requiring immediate intervention, offering short-term inpatient treatment to stabilize acute symptoms.

Acute care represents the highest-acuity level in Acadia’s service continuum. Patients may transition to specialty or residential treatment following stabilization, or return to outpatient care in their communities.

Specialty Treatment Facilities

The company’s 35 specialty treatment facilities address specific conditions including eating disorders and addiction. These programs provide focused treatment for patients whose primary diagnoses benefit from specialized clinical approaches.

Eating disorder treatment, for example, requires nutritional expertise, medical monitoring, and psychological support that differs from general psychiatric care. Addiction treatment programs incorporate detoxification, counseling, and recovery support services designed for substance use disorders.

Residential Treatment Centers

Acadia operates 164 comprehensive treatment centers providing continuum care for adults with addictive disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. Additionally, 9 pediatric residential treatment facilities serve younger patients requiring extended care in non-hospital settings.

Some residential programs incorporate outdoor therapeutic components, using structured activities in natural settings as part of treatment. Residential treatment bridges the gap between acute hospitalization and outpatient care, providing intensive programming in a less restrictive environment.

Outpatient Clinics and Community Services

Community-based programs extend Acadia’s reach beyond inpatient and residential settings. Outpatient services provide ongoing treatment for patients who have completed higher levels of care or whose conditions can be managed without residential placement.

These programs include individual and group therapy, medication management, and recovery support services. Outpatient treatment allows patients to maintain work, school, and family responsibilities while receiving behavioral health care.

Leadership Continuity in Care Delivery

Osteen’s return to the CEO role provides continuity in clinical leadership. Reeve B. Waud’s announcement emphasized her patient focus: “Debbie is a mission-driven executive with a commitment to patients who helped transform Acadia into the leading provider of behavioral healthcare in the U.S.”
